Yes We Can! A community of activists and organizers and citizens in Needham and surrounding towns

“YES WE CAN NEEDHAM” is an outgrowth of the Obama Volunteer organization, but we are not limited to only those people who worked on Obama’s campaign: anyone who finds our goals/values of interest is welcome; members are encouraged to invite more people in. United by progressive ideals that brought us to support/work for Obama in the first place, we are a citizen’s group, driven by our own principles, ideals, action, as well as inspired/moved to action by specific calls to service by President Obama as well as other activist groups (whether local or national).

Recognizing the uncommon value of the network and collaborations we have built through the Obama campaign and other political alliances, we hope to use this space as a way to maintain and expand the relationships and associations that made this group so effective in Fall 2008. Though there are many places to find interest kinship and political activism on the vast Internet, YWC offers the unique advantage of the local and real world connection, face-to-face collaboration, shared community, inspiration and energy.

GOALS
Our goals are as diverse and specific as the interests of the individual members of the community, however, broadly speaking we can identify the following as working aims for the group:

- To build off existing organizations, bringing in expertise of our individual membership, creating new ties to other organizations also working toward shared goals

- Committing to and strengthening the values and promises of our ideals/principles (which brought us together to work for Obama in the first place)—

- Apply our skills, organization/network to strategic, targeted, time-sensitive actions (defined either by our own passions or other larger groups, such as OFA)

- Flexibly organize around causes/issues

- Work to shape the Agenda and Change the process—

- Foster Engagement/Education/Awareness—not just every four years for an election—by sharing information and cultivating the Group Brain

- Keep the group “OPEN” –as an umbrella group not specifically tied to an agenda/cause, not driven to seek uniform consensus, so that the group can grow and change with evolving priorities of any given moment in our national/local lives

- Value dissent and differences of viewpoints as a means for greater education and understanding
